The Impact on Children from the Museological Proposal
By Tatiana Álvarez – Marketing and Communications Manager of the Canal Museum
The Canal Museum in Panama stands as a beacon of learning and exploration for the youngest, offering an innovative approach to non-formal education through its interactive exhibitions and educational programs. Every year, hundreds of children visit this space, where the history of the development of the Canal and the rich cultural heritage of the country come to life in attractive and memorable ways.
One of the main strengths of the museum is its ability to create interactive experiences that go beyond simple observation. The most recently renovated room, “Panama before the Canal,” features video games, 3D reproductions of archaeological pieces, and historical narrations through audio consoles. These tools not only capture the attention of children, but also encourage active learning, allowing them to interact with the content in a kinesthetic and sensorial way.
Here, learning is based on exploration, with children being able to touch and experiment, which contrasts with the more passive learning they often experience in the classroom. This approach allows them to build their understanding of the world through interaction and practice. Technological models allow them to see and feel history in a way that stays in their memory.
In addition, the Canal Museum promotes the connection between exhibitions and children's experiences. By integrating stories and historical figures into its exhibits, the museum not only contributes to educational processes and the collective creation of knowledge, but also emotionally engages visitors. The narratives presented are essential for children to process information in a meaningful way.
The role of the museum guides is also crucial. These staff are essential to facilitate learning, offering explanations and encouraging dialogue between children and their companions. Group conversations enrich the experience, as they allow children to share their observations and ask questions, thus deepening their understanding.
In short, the Canal Museum is not only a space where history is preserved; it is a dynamic environment that transforms children's learning into a fun and enriching experience. By providing opportunities for play, exploration and emotional connection with the content, the museum positions itself as a benchmark in museum education in Panama.
