Sustainability is a transcendental factor for the development of societies, where the environment, economy and culture are interconnected to lead progress towards a better future. Different entities are committed to sustainable development; however, in this text we mention one of the main actors that contribute to the cultural sustainability and identity of a nation: museums. These are receivers and guardians of spaces where cultural and historical heritage is preserved, but, at the same time, part of their objectives and missions is to promote and contribute to cultural sustainability and its diversity. This mission is fundamental for the Canal Museum, whose rooms promote and integrate the history of our country, in addition to including sustainable practices and initiatives that are offered to society for the historical, cultural and environmental conservation of our isthmus.
Education, research and different events are some of the spaces that the museum offers to society, committing to educate diverse communities and providing them with open spaces and dialogues that cover topics from history to the environment. Historical education at the museum allows us to know and learn about our country. Along with this, research contributes to sustainability through data analysis and cooperation between public agencies and entities, contributing to the development of cultural sustainability in the isthmus. In addition, they are complemented by different activities, workshops and temporary exhibitions that the museum creates for communities and families, celebrating our culture and motivating future actions on the path to development and diversity.
Knowing our history provides communities with the necessary tools to continue contributing to the growth and resilience of the nation, where the Canal Museum and the Panama Canal through its Visitor Centers are active agents that contribute and forge the identity and sense of belonging of our society.
