There is a magic to museums, and this one in particular.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Cuando surgi\u00f3 la oportunidad de postularme para el puesto de Coordinadora del Programa P\u00fablico en el Museo del Canal, ni siquiera lo consider\u00e9. Mi primer pensamiento fue: \u00bfqu\u00e9 s\u00e9 yo de programas p\u00fablicos y de comunidades? \u00bfY c\u00f3mo se involucra un museo con sus comunidades? No sab\u00eda mucho sobre lo espec\u00edfico, pero hacerme estas preguntas me hizo darme cuenta de que s\u00ed conoc\u00eda y ten\u00eda mucha experiencia en espacios culturales compartidos y en la creaci\u00f3n de comunidades a trav\u00e9s del arte, la cultura, el teatro y la m\u00fasica, especialmente gracias a mis a\u00f1os de trabajo voluntario en el Theatre Guild of Ancon y en el Festival de Cine IFF. Cuando le\u00ed m\u00e1s detalladamente la descripci\u00f3n del puesto, me di cuenta de que esta oportunidad abarcaba temas que me fascinaban, mezclados con un sinf\u00edn de audiencias por ver, conocer y atraer. Cambi\u00e9 mi mentalidad de \u00abno s\u00e9 de esto\u00bb a \u00abno conozco esto a\u00fan, pero puedo hacerlo y quiero aprender\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n I applied for the position, and when I was hired, I was overflowing with excitement\n(and nerves!). A little light lit up inside me; a flame\nthat came to life when I interacted with visitors who were seeing the\npermanent exhibitions for the first time, at the end of an interesting art\nworkshop, or at the conclusion of a discussion with archaeologists,\nhistorians, activists, ethnomusicologists (among the hundreds of\nactivities and events I had the opportunity to organize). That flame grew\nwhen people wrote to me about the impact of the museum on their\nlives, or about how they and I connected with dialogues and\nstories that seemed to come to life before our eyes.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Museums are magic, and stories are the spark within it. In\nPanama we have endless stories to tell, and in the museum they\nfind the place to unfold and connect with the public. And who\nis the public?, you will ask me. Who are those who come to the\nmuseum to walk through its halls, to sit in the auditorium and listen to\npresentations on history, art and culture? The audience is diverse: retirees,\nchildren, foreigners, students, families, tourists, sponsors,\nmuseum members\u2026 and they all converge under the same glass roof,\na kaleidoscope of people connecting with the stories we\nhost, sharing theirs, creating connections and generating\nmemories.<\/p>\n What do these audiences look for in a history museum? They all look for (and\nfind) something different in the halls, in the auditoriums and in our\nopen spaces. They look for their family history, to know in depth the history\nof Panama, to learn about the Canal and its global impact, to connect with\nartists, historians, archaeologists, authors, cultural managers,\njournalists, and with their national identity.<\/p>\n The Public Program is the place where all these characters\nconcentrate, and everything (everything!) connects and communicates. Storytelling is of\nutmost importance in this regard: breaking down our content and\nputting it back together, highlighting themes, choosing common threads and making sure\nthat the information reaches all the communities and audiences we serve\u2026 Everything connects, everything communicates.<\/p>\n Through the Public Program and the activities at the Canal Museum, education about the history of Panama and its canal, and the importance of the Panama Canal for our country, is\nstrengthened and promoted, thus strengthening our identity as Panamanians.<\/p>\n In October, I will celebrate three years at the Canal Museum. A magical,\ninspiring, challenging, renovated museum, with a dedicated, creative and\ndisciplined team. Three years of challenges, opportunities, growth and a lot of\ncreativity, creating spaces, programs, events and activities of all kinds to attract and entertain a broad audience that confirms\nthat there is a thirst for the magic of museums and that, although we still have a lot to do, we are on the right path and we leave our mark on it.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n There is magic in museums, and in this one in particular. In the work of\nour team, in the creation of its exhibitions, in the research\nproduced, in the smiles of the visitors who are found in\nour walls, in the roots that we weave and in the dialogues that we\npropose; in the play that a contemporary art intervention brings about as a result of our artistic residencies, in the sparkle in the eyes of school groups visiting us for the first time.<\/p>\n The doors are open. I don\u2019t just say that because I worked there; I never imagined myself working\nin a museum. I didn\u2019t grow up with any aspirations or fabulous ideas about\nworking in the museum sector. Many of the rules and protocols of museums\nwere foreign to me, and I was not a regular visitor to museums at home or abroad\n(what did I know about museums?!).<\/em><\/p>\n\n
